As part of its season opener last Wednesday night against Watertown IHC, the Cicero-North Syracuse ice hockey team promoted a “Red Out” and sold T-shirts that raised money for ALS awareness, a generous gesture.
And that was where the generosity ended.
Once on the ice at the Twin Rinks, the Northstars, who advanced to last winter’s Section III Division II semifinal before falling to eventual champion West Genesee, took as much as it could from the Cavaliers, scoring six times in each of the first two periods and ultimately prevailing by a 15-1 margin.
In all, C-NS took 52 shots, and the goal-scoring started early. By the second period, the Northstars were into double digits, and it was up 12-0 before easing up a bit in the last period and even surrendering a goal long after the outcome was settled.
Fourteen different C-NS players earned at least one point on this night, led by Logan Field, who poured in five goals and tacked on a pair of assists. Zach Matyasik also had a hat trick, scoring three times to go with two assists, while Matt Cramer had two goals and two assists.
Backing up their efforts, Gehris Sarosy had a goal and three assists. Jacob Denbleyker, Josh Ludden, Holden Sarosy and Nate Wagner also notched goals, with Parker Lane, Casey Koenig and Ethan Osgood gaining two assists apiece. Josh Matyasik, J.J. Wahl and Logan Ungelich had single assists.
This started a stretch of three games in four days for the Northstars, who visited Canton Friday night and rolled to a 5-1 victory, blanking the Golden Bears until the third period while steadily building a 3-0 lead before that frame.
Sarosy made this game a personal showcase, landing a three-goal hat trick and adding an assist as Cramer helped him out, with three assists to go with his lone goal. Field had the other goal as Denbleyker got two assists and Ludden one assist. Jack Doren was superb in goal, stopping 23 of the 24 Canton shots he faced.
Then the Northstars met Potsdam Saturday afternoon, the game turning into an exciting, high-scoring affair, but C-NS not quite able to make it three wins in a row as it fell to the Sandstoners 6-5 and looked ahead to Tuesday’s game at Kennedy Arena against Rome Free Academy, its fourth in seven days.
