In his own quiet and upstanding way, Marcellus girls lacrosse coach Dick Lundblad has built one of Central New York’s most consistent program, winning double-digit games each spring and putting itself into contention for league and Section III honors. All the while, a string of Lundblad’s best players have made their way to the college ranks, some, like Florida’s Nora Barry, turning into All-Americans that have made an impact far beyond the Mustangs’ realm. But when Marcellus defeated Westhill 15-11 last Monday night, it was time for Lundblad to take a bow as he won his 200th career game, an occasion the Mustangs celebrated with a large banner and other honors after the final horn sounded. It only figured that this came against one of Marcellus’ main rivals. Westhill arrived with a six-game win streak and no. 11 state Class C ranking, just three spots behind the Mustangs, and the game figured to be an active one. Indeed, the first half belonged to the offenses on both teams, but it was Marcellus that proved more potent, finding its way to a 10-6 lead. Then, in the second half, every time the Warriors tried to get closer, the Mustangs would answer. Audrey Cerrone led the way, pouring in five goals, with Maddie Conklin getting three goals and two assists. Ally Burrows scored four times as Colette Rigas earned a goal and two assists. Abby Vetsch had one goal and one assist and Molly Tice also found the net. Westhill’s effort included Erin McMullen’s three goals and one assist, with Shelby Stack getting two goals and three assists. Lydia Gosson also scored twice. Haileigh Farrell had a goal and assist. Jayanna Monds had two assists and Natalie Jetter had a goal, but Marcellus goalie Sarah Annable turned back 11 shots as Westhill’s pair of goalies, Esther Clifford and Morgan Hayes, combined to make 14 saves. The Mustangs improved to 10-2 on the season, while the Warriors fell to 9-3.
