The Baldwinsville softball team’s stay in the Section III Class AA playoffs proved too brief for its own liking. As the no. 8 seed, the Bees hosted no. 9 seed Auburn in Wednesday’s opening round, and found itself trying to catch up all the way through a 9-2 loss to the Maroons. Sophomore pitcher Liz Campbell never got a chance to settle into a rhythm as, in the top of the first inning, Auburn tagged her for three runs. Single runs followed in the third, fourth and fifth innings as the margin grew to 5-0. B’ville finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, only to see Auburn answer with three runs in the sixth to all but put the game away. Emily Brissenden had two of the Bees’ five hits, including a double, and scored a run. Jessica Testa got credit for an RBI as Maggie D’Eredita and Kaitlyn Massett also got credit for hits. Auburn’s Ali Van Giesen not only pitched and got the win, she banged out four of the Maroons’ 13 hits and drove in two runs as Meghan Feocco doubled and got three RBIs. B’ville closed its season with a record of 8-11, cooling off from a quick start in April. Just three seniors – Brissenden, Massett and Lindsay Varga – will depart, meaning the Bees should see marked improvement in 2012 if everyone else comes back.
