For the Fayetteville-Manlius track and field teams, last Wednesday’s trip to Rome Free Academy proved quite harrowing as it nearly suffered a sweep to the Black Knights. The Hornets did hold on for a 72-68 victory on the boys side, but F-M’s girls took a 78-63 defeat, burned by its inability to secure any points in field events. Heather Martin still took two of the sprints, as she ran the 200-meter dash in 26.3 seconds and covered 400 meters in 59 seconds flat. Martin also helped F-M win both the 4×400 (4:27.0) and 4×800 (10:19.0) relays with Jillian Fanning, Katie Sischo, Courtney Chapman, Kelly Muller and Natalie Zazzara. In the distance events, Fanning needed 2:21.5 to win the 800-meter run, while Katie Brislin tore to victory in the 1,500-meter run in 4:47.2 and Alana Pearl ran 3,000 meters in 10:53.8. Isabelle Carapella contributed a victory in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:15.3. However, RFA won every field events, including a sweep by Allison Cosimeno in the shot put and discus, as Kayla Husband took the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump. Meanwhile, in the boys meet F-M got a boost from sprinter Austin Perez, who worked his way to a win in the 100 in 11.2 seconds and also took the 200 in 22.8 seconds. Perez also teamed with Langston Lightcap, Aaron Blitz and Mark McGurrin to speed to first place in the 4×400 relay in 3:32.1. Nick Ryan supplied more points with his sweep of all three distance events. He ran the 800 in 2:05.1, covered the mile in 4:23.6 and, in the 3,200-meter run, earned the title in 9:44.3. Matt Corbett tied RFA’s John Swancott as they both cleared 5 feet 2 inches in the high jump. In the 4×800, McGurrin, Lightcap, Ben Thomas and Eric Billinson won in 9:01.9. RFA’s Josh Maiolo led his side with three wins in the 110 high hurdles (16.5 seconds), long jump (19 feet 11 3/4 inches) and triple jump (40 feet 3 1/2 inches).
