Idle for a week, the Bishop Ludden baseball team had to wait a long while for its bats to warm up again when play resumed in last Thursday’s game against Jamesville-DeWitt. Just in time, though, the offense did arrive – and it saved a 6-3 victory over the Red Rams that improved the Gaelic Knights’ record to 5-1. J-D got to Ludden ace Ryan O’Kane for three total runs in the second and third innings. And the Gaelic Knights did not answer until the fourth, with a single tally off Rams pitcher Matt Yonta, but still found itself down 3-1 going into the seventh inning. By now, Max Bregande had relieved Yonta – but Ludden got to him and replacement Tyler Kirwan for five runs in that pivotal seventh inning. Mike DePalma and Ciro Frontale drove in the go-ahead runs as Aaron Maher earned an RBI, too. James Murray added a pair of hits. Meanwhile, O’Kane recorded the final three outs, improving to 3-0 on the season as he limited J-D to four hits and two walks while he struck out 10. The wild weather last Tuesday had postponed Ludden’s highly-anticpated trip to Homer, who has raced to a 6-1 start behind the power hitting of Zach Blanden. In softball, Bishop Ludden, rained out early in the week against Bishop Grimes, also waited until the late stages before getting the runs needed to beat the Port Byron Panthers 7-2 on Thursday afternoon. Down 1-0, the Gaelic Knights used three runs in the fourth inning to go out in front, then put together a four-run rally in the sixth to get clear. Lauren Roy and Jessica Sciore each had three hits to lead Ludden’s 14-hit attack. Korey Kibling, who pitched a complete game that included eight strikeouts and just four hits allowed, earned an RBI, as did Roy, Kayla Kibling, Grace Rooney and Aubrie Murray. Rooney scored twice.
