Just when the Solvay girls soccer team needed a further confidence boost with the Class B playoffs looming, it took a 1-0 loss at home to Sknaeateles last Tuesday night. The Lakers came to Earl Hadley Stadium with a 2-8-2 record, though that didn’t reflect how closely it had played most of its opponents in those eight defeats. As what happens often in soccer, one team gets all the chances, yet the other prevails. Solvay peppered the Skaneateles defense all night, yet saw every shot gobbled up as Laker goalie Mary Buck made 17 saves. By contrast, the Bearcats’ defense didn’t see as much action. But midway through the second half, with the game still 0-0, Emma Ford burst in and pushed a shot past Chelsea Roor for what would prove to be the game’s only goal. In yet another close call Thursday night, the Bearcats lost 2-1 to East Syracuse-Minoa. All the offense came in the second half as Rachel Peterson scored for Solvay, but the Spartans countered with Amanda Wall and Alex McEachron finding the net. Root had 10 saves. Solvay’s boys soccer team could not handle state no. 1-ranked Skaneateles last Tuesday night, taking a 9-1 road loss to the Lakers. The swift Skaneateles tempo led to continual attacks, and though Kosta Sukhorukov made 25 saves, he could not prevent the Lakers from converting often. Jeff Baldetti (three goals, one assist) and A.J. Richichi (two goals, one assist) led that attack as Nate Antonacci averted the shutout by scoring for the Bearcats in the second half. In a much closer game on Friday, Solvay fell to Cortland, 1-0, as T.J. Bardsley’s first-half goal held up for the Purple Tigers against Sukhorukov’s 10 saves. Solvay’s girls had a 5-1 defeat to OHSL Liberty division leader Marcellus, where Tessa Pucello had the lone goal in the first half.
