Not resting during the April school break — or cooling off, either — the Vernon Verona Sherrill baseball team remained among the area’s best. The Red Devils continued its strong start on Monday, beating Jamesville-DeWitt 9-4. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, VVS pulled ahead for good with three runs in that frame, then got away in the sixth with a four-run outburst, keyed by three straight doubles. Jamie Cielinski, who had one of those doubles, finished with three RBIs as Tyler Mautner and Steve Davis each drove in two runs. Mautner also pitched four innings to earn the win as Jason Dalton cleaned up in a long relief stint. A day later, the Red Devils improved to 4-0, derailing Westmoreland pitching ace Brandon Jones in the late going to earn a 6-2 decision. Jones, whose 3-0 start included a no-hitter earlier this season against New York Mills, earned 10 strikeouts against VVS and had a 2-1 lead going into the top of the sixth. But the Red Devils tied it up on Mautner’s hustling double and Mitch Iseneker’s matching double, then took the lead for good on Travis Eaton’s unlikely two-run single. Prior to this, Eaton, mostly a defensive replacement, had been hitless in five at-bats this season. Now with the lead, Collin Laguzza went to work. Laguzza had replaced Cielinski in the fifth, didn’t allow a hit in three innings of work, striking out four on his way to earning the win. Having earned the no. 18 state Class A ranking, VVS made it five wins in a row on Thursday, mauling Sherburne-Earlville 11-3 as Mautner and Davis took lead roles. All four times they reached the plate, Mautner and Davis got hits, Mautner earning a home run and two doubles and finishing with four RBIs as Davis added three RBIs. The Red Devils scored in each of the first five innings and finished with 16 hits for the afternoon to negate four errors. Meanwhile, Dalton pitched 5 2/3 innings before allowing a hit, though his late struggles forced Cole Barbano to enter and get the final outs. A rematch with Westmoreland followed on Friday – and without Jones to worry about, the Red Devils feasted on Bulldog pitching in a 21-5 romp. The fun included 20 hits, an eight-run secong inning and nine-run fifth inning. Cielinski and Laguzza each finished with three RBIs as Cielinski produced four hits and Laguzza three hits. Both of Mautner’s hits were doubles as he scored three times, as Davis added two hits and two runs of his own. Pitcher Jesse Whitmeyer allowed just one hit in four innings of work to get the win. This meant that VVS took a 6-0 record back into Tri-Valley League play as it met Clinton and Utica-Notre Dame before clashing with rival Oneida Thursday afternoon on the Indians’ home diamond.
