Though it took a few innings for the bats to warm up, the Baldwinsville baseball team still made its 2010 opener a memorable one. The Bees, hosting perennial Class AA contender Rome Free Academy Wednesday afternoon, wore down the Black Knights’ pitching in the late stages and recorded a 10-3 victory. Coming off a 2009 season where it fell in the AA quarterfinals to Liverpool, B’ville, under the direction of head coach Dave Penafeather, would get a fine pitching effort from Mike St. John, who blanked RFA over the first five innings to get the win. When the Black Knights did score in the top of the sixth, St. John went out, but Nick Riley had little trouble going the rest of the way. B’ville started to get away with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. It then tacked on four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to reach double digits on the board. Danny Wright, in particular, had a terrific afternoon, smashing a home run and double and finishing with a career-best five RBIs. Bo Watson doubled and drove in two runs, while Connor Martin and Kyle Latanzio picked up one RBI apiece. In non-league action on Saturday, B’ville met defending Class A champion Mexico and again took charge, beating the Tigers 9-1. The Bees used a three-run first inning to pull out in front, then scored twice in the third and three more times in the fourth inning. Wright continued to dominate at the plate with a double, single and three RBIs. Dan Dubiel doubled twice and drove in two runs as Martin and Brandon Peters earned RBIs, too. Bo Watson took his turn on the mound and was quite stingy, limiting Mexico to just one hit in six innings before Kyle Cushman closed things out. At 2-0, the Bees would host Fayetteville-Manlius on Tuesday and go to Utica Proctor Wednesday before hosting defending Class AA champion Cicero-North Syracuse on Thursday.
