Not only is it a new season for the Liverpool girls lacrosse team, but it’s a new era, as defined by a change at the top. When Renee McKee departed as head coach, the Warriors turned to a much younger face — Elizabeth Acee, all of 24, who had assisted McKee last season when Liverpool made it to the Section III Class A semifinals before falling to Baldwinsville. Acee, a Henninger graduate, is the daughter of Henninger’s long-time boys lacrosse coach Tom Acee and, as a player at SUNY-Cortland, led the Red Dragons to four straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. And it wouldn’t take long for Acee to face some major challenges, as Liverpool, who will again play most of its home games at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium, faced two Class A powers in a 48-hour span to start the season. First, the Warriors met Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday at Henninger’s Sunnycrest Field, nearly forcing overtime before taking a 14-13 loss to the Hornets. It was close all the way through. Trading runs in the first half, Liverpool and F-M went to the break tied, 7-7, and it remained even as the Warriors fought through cold, wet conditions to flourish on the offensive side. Andrea Flood had five goals and one assist, with Kathleen Conese picking up four goals and one assist. Alison Flood found the net twice as Ashleigh Caruso got one goal and one assist and Kayla DeAngelis also converted. Tess Tracy, returning in goal, had 13 saves, but had to watch as F-M’s Mollie Caputo put in the game-winner with just six seconds left. Kelly Perry led the Hornets with six goals. Liverpool then traveled to Ray Middle School Thursday for its first encounter with Baldwinsville since last year’s semifinal. And even with a brand-new roster, the Bees still handled the Warriors in a 16-5 decision. Never leading, the Warriors did get on the board early with goals from Conese and Tracy Fadden, yet still was behind 5-2. Kristina Lombard scored one second before halftime to make it 8-3, but the Bees got three straight goals to open the second half and pulled clear. Lombard would add a second goal and DeAngelis would find the net, but the Bees had too much of Sarah Clark and Mackenzie Kjerstad, as Clark finished with six goals and Kjerstad added five goals and two assists. Later that night, Cicero-North Syracuse’s girls lacrosse team debuted – and ran right into a machine. That “machine” was defending Class A champion West Genesee, who beat the Northstars 19-2 at Bragman Stadium. It was 7-0, with the game barely nine minutes old, before Rachel Bowles scored to get CNS on the board. Not letting up, the Wildcats built the margin to 14-1 by halftime, then kept on going as Bre Hudgins, Katey Hart (three goals each) and Morgan Corso (two goals, two assists) all took turns running through the CNS defense. Despite all this, eighth-grade goalie Stephanie Reynolds still made 10 saves and Emily Bryerton tacked on a second-half goal.
