Jordan-Elbridge High School social worker Wendy West Pidkaminy will hold the first of three free workshops tomorrow to help teachers, educators and caregivers learn to communicate with children and teens without nagging, bribery, threats or shouting. Pidkaminy will present the three-session workshop “Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach,” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 13, 20 and 27 at the Jordan-Elbridge Community Center, Route 31 in the village of Jordan. More than 50 people have registered to attend, Pidkaminy said, and there is plenty of room for more. If you are interested in attending but cannot make it to tomorrow’s session, Pidkaminy said the second week will include a short review to bring people up to speed. This week’s session will address the foundations of the Nurtured Heart Approach, created by Howard Glasser to positively communicate and transform children, particularly those with challenges like ADHD. The Jan. 20 session will cover transforming communication skills; Pidkaminy will address transforming limit setting and discipline techniques in the third and final session on Jan. 27. Pidkaminy is the author of “Parenting Challenging Children with Power, Love and Sound Mind: The nurtured heart approach from a biblical viewpoint,” and “Jimmy and Julia’s Rainforest Adventure.” She is an advanced trainer in the Nurtured Heart method, and has implemented the system with her two children, ages 13 and 10. To register to attend the free event or for information about the method, call 689-8500 ext. 1016 or e-mail [email protected].
