Further cementing its reputation as one of Central New York’s elite, the Skaneateles girls vollleyball team earned the championship of its own division during last Monday’s Laidlaw Tournament at Canastota High School. The Lakers were placed into the six-team “Gold” division — and would finish on top, going 9-1, its only game defeat coming to Chittenango. Otherwise, the Lakers swept Dolgeville, Sauquoit Valley, Oneida and Adirondack in round-robin play. Emily Wood earned MVP honors, with teammates Ryan Merle and Alexa Campanile joining Wood on the All-Tournament team. This sets up Skaneateles for a key homestand in the first full week of 2010. After hosting Westhill on Tuesday, the Lakers meet namesake Cazenovia, also unbeaten, in their first head-to-head encounter since last February’s Section III Class B final, where Cazenovia prevailed.
