Attempting to recover from its first defeat of the season to Fayetteville-Manlius, the Liverpool boys basketball team went to Henninger on Friday night. The Black Knights were 1-2 and coming off its own poor performance in a 66-46 loss to city rival Corcoran. In one of the season’s wildest games to date, the Warriors threw away the lead in the last minute of regulation, only to recover in overtime and beat the Black Knights 77-70. Those mood swings were evident throughout the night. Henninger pushed the tempo throughout the first half, and though Liverpool did an admirable job keeping up, the Black Knights took a 35-29 edge to the break. Then Liverpool appeared to seize command of the show in the third quarter. Defensive pressure led to turnovers, and with Adam Misener and Richard Green both hitting on multiple 3-pointers, the Warriors outscored Henninger 20-7 in that period. Nursing that lead throughout the fourth quarter, Liverpool appeared to be safe — but the Black Knights erased a five-point deficit in the last minute of regulation, tying it, 65-65, and forcing four minutes of overtime. Regrouping, Liverpool went back in front for good in the OT, forcing itself to the foul line and making 10 of the 14 free throws it attempted as it outscored Henninger 12-5 in that extra period. Misener’s career-best 19 points included four 3-pointers, while Green hit three times beyond the arc on his way to 15 points. Jesse Gates earned 16 points, with Connor Rogers producing 14 points. For Henninger, Kadeem Johnson had 20 points, with Kavon Delee (14 points) and Brandon Hanks (13 points) close behind. Liverpool returnd home Tuesday to face Oswego, then has a shot at payback against Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday — though it will be in the cozy “Hornets’ Nest” gymnasium that F-M calls home.
