As neighbors in the OHSL Liberty division, the Westhill, Marcellus and Solvay girls basketball teams got to run into each other throughout last week’s action. First, the Mustangs visited Solvay last Tuesday night, and a hard-fought affair saw Marcellus prevail over the Bearcats 51-45. Strong on both ends in the first quarter, Marcellus pulled ahead, 14-8, and kept on going until it had a 41-29 lead by the time the third period ended. This gave the Mustangs room to withstand Solvay’s late comeback attempt. With the Bearcats containing Melissa Lee (she had just six points) inside, Megan Tock worked outside for 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Others helped, too, as Christa Rockburn put in 12 points and Marie Temara added 10 points. Solvay, in defeat, saw Tessa Pucello lead its comeback as she earned 18 points. Abbey Jones had nine points, with Amanda Bigness, Tiffany Guinta and Denyel Busch each picking up six points. On Thursday night, it would be Westhill facing Solvay — and it would prove to be just as competitive, but with the same negative result for the Bearcats as the Warriors prevailed by a score of 52-43. At no point did Solvay ever lag too far behind. Still, Westhill (4-0) seized an 11-6 lead by the end of the first quarter, then kept on matching the visitors every time it wanted to edge closer. Even when the Warriors got just six third-quarter points, Solvay could not cut into the margin. Emily Haggerty worked her way to 22 points on Westhill’s behalf, while eighth-grader Anna Ross hit double figures for the fourth game in a row, earning 13 points. Maggie Tripodi (seven points) and Kathryn Christensen (six points) contributed, too. Pucello gave Solvay 14 points as Jones added 13 points and Guinta got seven points. This came after the Warriors ripped through Phoenix 58-24 last Tuesday night. In a vintage effort, Westhill shut out Phoenix in the first quarter, racing to a 19-0 lead, then added a 20-7 third-quarter push for good measure. Haggerty, with 16 points, set the Warriors’ pace, while Ross earned 13 points. Kayla Stirpe stepped up, earning 11 points, while Christensen picked up eight points and Stephanie Baron earned six points. Marcellus would also beat Skaneateles 54-25 on Friday, though the game really was decided in the first quarter, when the Mustangs reeled off 24 unanswered points on its way to a 34-4 halftime edge. Tock had 17 points, with Temara getting 11 points and Emily Brisette 10 points.
