Four local girls tennis players, from three different schools, are on their way to this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament at Eastside Racquet Club. Anke Von Hanstein, from Manlius-Pebble Hill, and Sienna Susko, from Fayetteville-Manlius, are both going as singles players, while the CBA doubles team of Julie Thomson-Basha and Emily Norkett also advanced. All of them did so during last week’s Section III state qualifier at Drumlins Country Club, where Von Hanstein took the singles championship. Up against Auburn’s Clair Minnoe in the final, Von Hanstein won in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. As for Susko, she had to win her third-place match against Baldwinsville’s Becky Guzzo to get to the state tournament. In straight sets, Susko won 6-3, 6-4. Thomson-Basha and Norkett made their way to the doubles championship round, which mean automatic state tournament qualification. In the finals, they lost in three sets to Katherine Hill and Megan Holleran (Skaneateles) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, reversing the result of their duel in the sectional Class B team tournament. F-M’s duo of Maria Mintskovsky and Katie Muller had a shot at the third doubles slot at Eastside, only to lose to Ashleigh Caruso and Sarah O’Hara (Liverpool) 6-2, 6-3.
