No doubt, the Skaneateles girls soccer team had, like many foes of Marcellus, grown sick and tired of seeing the Mustangs pull out close contests at the end. So it had to feel doubly sweet for the Lakers to go to Marcellus Friday afternoon and beat the archrival Mustangs 1-0 in a similar manner, as Taylor Kerr’s goal late in regulation provided the winning margin. This was a rematch of the dramatic Sept. 11 game won by the Mustangs 1-0 in Skaneateles — done, of course, in the final seconds of overtime to add to the Lakers’ early-season woes. Exactly four weeks later, the trend would reverse itself, mainly because Skaneateles had improved on defense enough to stay at home and stay poised in the face of the Mustangs’ attack through a 0-0 first half. In getting her shutout, Erica Tardiff only had to make three saves. At the same time, though, the Lakers didn’t get a lot of chances as it spent a lot of time adjusting to the Marcellus artificial turf field. Deep into the second half, it remained 0-0, and Marcellus fans stayed relaxed, having seen this many times before this fall as the Mustangs mostly built its 10-game win streak through dramatic late wins. What no one expected was that, with 7:06 to play in regulation, Kerr would emerge from a scramble in front of the Mustangs’ net and rip a shot past Megan Tock, and that the goal would hold up. The week began for Skaneateles with a frustrating trip west to face its namesakes from Cazenovia, ending in a 1-0 overtime defeat. For 80 minutes of regulation, Skaneateles withstood all of the attacks, thanks to good work from the defense and goalie Erica Tardiff, who made 11 saves. At the same time, though, Skaneateles had all kinds of chances to break out in front, only to get thwarted. Cazenovia goalie Jamie Enders earned 10 saves. Five minutes into the first OT period, Katie Kleine, from 18 yards out, fired a shot past Tardiff, with Kristi Kleine earning the assist. Faring better at home on Wednesday, the Lakers ripped Phoenix 7-1, particularly flourishing in the first half when it put together five unanswered goals when backed by a strong wind. Amanda Gray put together a three-goal hat trick, adding an assist. Carly Davis helped out with two goals and one assist, while Kerr and Lauren Goetzmann also scoring and Grace Van der Ven also getting an assist. This led to Friday, to Marcellus — and what could mark a turning point in the Lakers’ season as it improved to 8-4, 7-3 in league play. The Lakers are home this week to face Jordan-Elbridge and Solvay.
