Is this the year that the Solvay girls soccer team becomes more of a threat to its more illustrious neighbors in the OHSL Liberty division? Constantly shadowed by the likes of Westhill and Marcellus, the Bearcats began the 2009 season with a superb effort Tuesday night at Earl Hadley Stadium against Manlius-Pebble Hill, smashing the Trojans by a score of 8-1. Attacking at will, Solvay snagged a 4-0 lead by halftime, but didn’t stop there, doubling its output in the second half. At the heart of it all, Alexis Bandera proved unstoppable, putting up a career-best four goals and adding an assist. Mickenzie Moore contributed two goals and one assist, while Jessica Savo and Amanda Bigness each had one goal. Alison Mrowinski got two assists as Gabby Santoferrara and Tessa Pucello had one assist apiece. MPH had its fair share of chances, too, but Solvay goalkeeper Chelsea Root stood up well to them, turning away 15 of the 16 shots she faced.
