So much had gone right for so long that it had to jolt the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team to go through a losing streak. But the more difficult part had to be the fact that the Hornets’ 10-9 loss to Corcoran was the third time in eight days that F-M had lost by a single goal. First came the 8-7 overtime defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse on May 12, followed by the stirring rally at West Genesee that still ended in a 9-8 loss when John Glesener scored with less than 30 seconds left in regulation. Now came Corcoran, armed with a 14-2 record and a Player-of-the-Year candidate in James Cathers that would prove his worth again right here. F-M led, 2-1, after one period, but that didn’t last. Cathers started dominating the face-offs and, over the next two periods, accumulated five goals and one assist, turning a tight game into what looked like a Cougar runaway. Trailing 9-3 late in the third period, F-M repeated its behavior from the West Genesee game and nearly made it all the way back. The Hornets scored once before the fourth quarter, then finally started winning face-offs, turning them into goals as it charged within one before falling just short. Matt Taylor, with two goals and four assists, led the rally, as Justin DePalma added two goals and three assists. Mike O’Neil and Ari Waffle also found the net twice, with Mike Poppleton also scoring. Alex Cameron-Carter and Kevin Fletcher earned assists. F-M goes to Nottingham Friday for its last bit of regular-season work. The Class A playoffs start next weekend.
