So it was all falling into place for the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team — a double-digit win streak, dominant performances during that run, and a clean shot at archrival West Genesee Thursday night with the no. 1 seed in the Section III Class A playoffs possibly at stake. Except that, just two days before going to Camillus, the Hornets slipped up, at home, in a stunning 8-7 overtime loss to Cicero-North Syracuse. CNS arrived with a solid 8-5 record, but had just lost to Liverpool 19-9 in its previous outing. Nothing suggested that it would give F-M a hard time. But right from the start, the Northstars dictated the game’s pace and did an especially good job on the defensive side, holding the Hornets without a goal in the second quarter and sneaking into a 4-3 lead. F-M could only stay patient and look for its own chances. Matt Taylor found them, earning five goals, but the Northstars successfully kept his teammates from doing much. Only Justin DePalma and Mike O’Neil scored otherwise. CNS took the game to overtime at 7-7 and, just a minute into that extra period, Mike DeBottis flung a shot past Stefan Basile for the game-winner. DeBottis and Pat Tierney each had two goals for the Northstars, with Tierney adding three assists. Anthony Puma made 14 saves, twice Basile’s total.
