West Genesee’s boys lacrosse team faced one of its toughest road tests of the season – and managed to pass. Unbeaten on the road this spring, the Wildcats went to Holland Stadium Tuesday night and left with a critical 10-5 win over Auburn. This was the 698th career win for head coach Mike Messere, and he could get to 700 later this week when the Wildcats host Central Square and Liverpool. WG and Auburn hadn’t met since last year’s Section III Class A final, and the Maroons had built a 7-3 record through controlling the game’s tempo and playing first-rate defense. The Wildcats cared about none of this, though, as it took full advantage of Auburn’s first-half struggles, dominating the possession and claiming a 3-0 lead before the first quarter was done. The Maroons got on the board in the second period, but just once. Meanwhile, the Wildcats extended the margin to 7-1 — which, as it turned out, was needed. Auburn roared back in the third period, closing within three, 8-5, with lots of time in the fourth quarter to do the rest. But Jack Conboy, Joe Fazio, Joe Fletcher and the rest of WG’s back line shut the door again in the final period. On the offensive end, Matt McCabe had three goals, with Jim Marks adding two goals. Five other players –Ryan McConnell, Ike Hopper, Jordan Rogers, Jaron Davie and Connor Regin — scored, too, with Hopper adding two assists. John Glesener, Chris Burns and Tyler Brown earned assists.
