In the path toward a redemptive shot at West Genesee, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team hit some small obstacles, then shoved them aside with authority. When the Hornets met Liverpool for the second time in a week last Tuesday afternoon, it started bad — but did everything else right in pounding the Warriors 17-4. They had met April 29 at F-M, the Hornets prevailing 15-9 by starting fast. That didn’t happen in the rematch, as Liverpool roared out to a 3-0 edge, two of the goals coming from Tyler Kamide and Matt DiMarco 15 seconds apart. Sensing trouble, head coach Chris Kenneally got a time-out. F-M regrouped — and proceeded to put up 14 unanswered goals, blanking Liverpool until the fourth quarter, when the game was well out of reach. By the middle of the second quarter, F-M had the lead, and even defender Artie Cooper contributed an assist on Mike Poppleton’s goal just before halftime that made it 5-3. Any doubts about the outcome vanished when the Hornets got three goals in 31 seconds late in the third quarter. Amid all this, Mike O’Neil had five goals, plus an assist, while Matt Taylor worked his way to three goals and three assists. Poppleton, Ari Waffle and Justin DePalma each scored twice, with Jim Dittmer putting up four assists to go with his single goal. Ron Caupton and Chris Walsh earned goals, too, as Glen Trachtenberg added an assist. Returning home Thursday night, the Hornets ripped Henninger 20-5, sprinting out to a 12-1 lead by halftime and getting a lot of players involved. Waffle had five goals, as Taylor earned two goals and three assists and DePalma put up a goal and five assists. Poppleton, Jeff Shields and Tyler Gebhardt each scored twice as O’Neil, Walsh, Tim Beach, Henry Atallah, Tim Beach and Matt Klepper also scored. Before all this, the Hornets took on Central Square May 1 and used two big surges to push past the Red Hawks 11-6. F-M bolted to a 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Things cooled off for a while, but with a 4-1 third-quarter burst, the margin grew to 10-3, and the Hornets were safe. Taylor and Waffle both had three goals, with Taylor adding two assists. DePalma (two goals, one assist) and Poppleton (one goal, two assists) both had three points, with’Neil and Jake Cooper also scoring. Dittmer had an assist.
