In an instant classic, rivals Vernon Verona Sherrill and Oneida got together for last Tuesday night’s Section III Class B boys volleyball semifinal — and stayed on the court for a while. The Red Devils trailed 2-0 after two games, only to make a stirring comeback to stun the Indians in five and advance to the championship round. Wanting to play the final on its home court, Oneida prevailed in a tight opening game, 26-24, then proceeded to win the second game by a more comfortable 25-19 margin. Somehow, VVS kept its poise, returning to the fray by prevailing in the third game 25-20. Then the Red Devils evened it up by taking the fourth game, 25-21, and kept that momentum going in the decisive fifth game by prevailing it 25-21. Drew Foster led VVS with 17 kills, while Luke Voelker picked up 37 assists. Oneida saw David Watson earn 22 assists and 12 kills. Mike Rabbit earn 20 kills, with Aaron Meyers (11 kills) and Brian Sheridan (seven kills) in support. Matt Bonville had 25 assists. VVS will face Living Word Academy, who eliminated Jamesville-DeWitt, in Thursday night’s final – at Oneida, of all places.
