With dreams of going all the way to the top, Cazenovia wrestler Alex Petroff could not quite get there during Saturday’s Section III Division II (small school) championship meet at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Petroff, one of the favorites at 125 pounds, came into the sectional meet with a 32-3 record, with two of those defeats coming to South Jefferson’s Sean Hanson, the top seed. Petroff had the no. 2 seed. Following a first-round bye, Petroff easily handled his first match against Sandy Creek’s Matt Shirley, finishing off a technical fall 48 seconds into the third period. But in the semifinals against General Brown’s Justin Green, the luck changed. Green jumped out in front and, despite all of Petroff’s efforts to catch up, maintained that lead the rest of the match. Green stunned Petroff 12-7 to advance to the finals. Forced into the consolation bracket, Petroff showed the heart that made him a four-time OHSL Liberty division champion. He needed an overtime takedown to beat Joe DelConte (Frankfort-Schuyler) 2-0, then beat Pat Cost (Marcellus) 7-1 to take third place. As for Green, he didn’t even stay on the mat one period in the final against Hanson, who won with a pin in 1:40 to advance to this weekend’s state meet in Albany. Dylan Perry, representing the Lakers at 140 pounds, beat Lowville’s Shane Houppert 5-3 in the opening round, then ran into Kris Shirley (Sandy Creek) and lost an 8-0 decision. In the consolation bracket, Perry fell to Homer’s Nate Crawford 4-1. Brad Nardella, at 96 pounds, only lasted one round, beaten in a 6-4 decision by Watertown IHC’s Nick Koelmel.
