For the first time in four years, the Baldwinsville ice hockey team will get to play a post-season game in front of home fans at Lysander Arena — and it had to go on the road to make that possible. To be more specific, the Bees had to go east, on Route 31, and visit Cicero Twin Rinks last Tuesday night to clinch second place in Division I in the course of a hard-fought 4-3 win over Fayetteville-Manlius. Both the Bees and Hornets entered the game with 18 points, and the Bees’ hopes for catching first-place West Genesee ended on the same night when the Wildcats whipped Auburn 8-1. They played through a 2-2 first period, each side converting, but B’ville took charge in the second period with a pair of unanswered goals to lay claim to a 4-2 lead. With Nick Leader making 22 saves, one more than F-M counterpart Mike Poppleton, the Bees held on down the stretch despite the Hornets’ comeback attempt. Amid a balanced attack, Pat Briggs, Chris Newman, Nick Gaworecki and Brett Earle each took turns scoring. Adam Mohr and Brad Burlingame joined Briggs and Newman in the assist column. Matt Esposito, Billy Kent and Mike Amidon put up F-M’s goals.
