On the surface, the Baldwinsville wrestling team’s 65-3 rout over Auburn on Thursday night at Baker High School’s gymnasium did not carry much excitement, as the Bees won all but one of the 13 matches. However, it proved to be a special night for B’ville freshman Anthony Finocchiaro, who became the youngest wrestler in the program’s history to reach 100 career wins. As the draw would have it, Finocchiaro, who wrestled at 112 pounds, had to wait most of the meet to get his turn, since they started at 135 pounds. Despite the wait, Finocchiaro, a 2008 state tournament participant, was ready when he finally took the mat against Auburn’s Joe Giacona. Finocchiaro accumulated points early, then finished the matter in the second period when he pinned Giacona at the 3:15 mark. So provided the climax of a spectacular evening where each of B’ville’s wrestlers tuned up for the Section III Dual Meet with some winning efforts as the team’s record improved to 20-5. Cookie Caloia got it started at 135 pounds by taking 53 seconds to pin Brandon Fromel. Antonio Peck (140 pounds) followed with an 8-0 shutout of Neil Halpin, while Curt McArdell (145 pounds) needed just 23 seconds to pin Rocco DeFranco. Nate Russell managed to top McArdell at 152 pounds with a 20-second pin of Dan McCormick as Sean Hennigan (160 pounds) needed all six minutes to beat Justin Gilmore 8-2. Up at 215 pounds, Kyle Sheridan duplicated Russell by taking 20 seconds to finish off Matt Mattes, this after Corey Buyck (189 pounds) pinned Ian Merritt in 1:25 and Andrew Giromini (171 pounds) took 1:06 to pin Dominick Colella. A forfeit to Joe Shaheen (103 pounds) preceded Finocchiaro’s milestone win. Adding further to the fun, Eddie Valentine (125 pounds) would pin James Martari in 1:49 and Tim Hamm, in the 130-pound finale, routed Kenny Currier 17-6.
