Though it isn’t quite even between the Oneida and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys volleyball teams, at least the Indians are on the board. Oneida needed just three games to knock off the rival Red Devils Thursday night, a sharp contrast to their last meeting Jan. 27, when the Indians had a 2-0 lead in games, only to watch VVS rally to win in five. Here, VVS, who had won both of the previous meetings with Oneida this season, tried to get the early edge, leading 20-16 in the first game before the Indians got six straight points to move in front, then held on to win 25-22. A 25-21 win in the second game put the Indians in the exact same spot as the first meeting, and a tight third game with 13 different ties followed. At 20-20, though, the Indians got the serve back with a Travis Morrison kill, and Shawn Ano would add another kill. Then Sam Adams closed out the match, 25-20, with back-to-back aces. Overall, Ano picked up 13 kills, with Adams adding 10 kills and Kevin Cavanagh five kills. On the Indians’ back line, Eric Merrell had 14 assists and Morrison produced 13 assists as Cody Staple added six digs. In defeat, VVS saw Cole Barbano earn 19 assists as Jake Voelker got seven kills and 12 digs. Casey Henderson and Jordan Loboda each had six kills and five blocks as Kyle Renwick contributed eight digs. Oneida went out last Monday and earned a five-game victory over Living Word Academy. After winning the opener 25-16, the Indians got trounced, 25-13, in the second game, but shook it off and won its own 25-12 romp in the third game. The Lions did stay alive by winning the fourth game 25-20, but Oneida had the last surge, prevailing in the decisive fifth game 25-19. Up front, Ano registered 24 kills and nine blocks as Adams put up 17 kills, three aces and three blocks. Cavanagh had seven kills and eight digs. Merrell assumed more back-line duties and earned 30 assists, while Morrison picked up 15 assists, five digs and three kills. Staple amassed 20 digs. The Indians then swept Chittenango 25-21, 26-24, 25-19 on Tuesday night. Adams and Cavanagh each gained nine kills and Ano earned eight kills, plus five digs. Staple finished with 14 digs as Morrison (11 assists) and Merrell (10 assists) split Oneida’s back-line duties. For the Bears, Caleb Mannix mixed in eight kills and eight assists, with Tanner Makowski adding eight kills and seven assists. Shane Mahosky and Ryan Smith both had three kills. VVS swept Jamesville-DeWitt 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 last Monday night. Henderson, with 11 kills and three blocks, led the Red Devils’ consistent effort on the front line as Loboda added seven kills. After the Oneida loss, VVS needed five games to get past Little Falls on Friday. It lost the first game to the Mounties 25-22 and just pulled out the second game, 26-24. After a 25-10 romp in the third game, the Red Devils could not close it out, losing the fourth game 25-23, but did pull out a 25-20 win in the final game. Barbano finished with 25 assists, while Henderson and Loboda both earned 10 kills and combined for 13 blocks. Voelker added seven kills and eight digs as Steve Geer gained seven kills and six digs.
