Having grown accustomed to close matches, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys volleyball team had another one last Tuesday night, needing five games to beat the Chittenango Bears. After the Red Devils won the first game 25-20, Chittenango struck, claiming a tight second game 25-23 to pull even. Then VVS won the third game 25-18, only to see the Bears send the match to the limit with a 25-17 decision in the fourth game. But a quick start by the Red Devils in the final game produced a 13-4 lead that held up as VVS won the match 25-16. Cole Barbano earned 34 saves for VVS (7-1), aiding a balanced front line where Casey Henderson, with 10 kills and seven blocks, led the way. Jake Voelker had nine kills and six digs as Jordan Loboda added nine kills and five blocks. Steve Geer (seven kills) and Alex Rose (six kills) also made solid contributions as Kyle Renwick earned eight digs. Chittenango, who fell to 5-5 on the season, saw Caleb Mannix produce 26 kills and 17 assists. Tanner Makowski had 28 assists and 12 kills as Ryan Smith earned nine kills and Mike Messinger produced five blocks.
