Girls golf Mustangs sweep matches with Westhill

May 14, 2018 Phil Blackwell Eagle Observer, High School

Another head-to-head match between the Marcellus and Westhill girls golf teams last Tuesday afternoon at Tuscarora Golf Club would go 210-229 in favor of the Mustangs, who moved to 5-0 on the season.

These same teams had met eight days earlier at Camillus Country Club, the Mustangs prevailing 198-221. Now, it was a bit closer, but still in favor of Marcellus.

Mary Colella shot the low nine-hole score of 46. Elise LaBombard, with a 52, and Kendall Koloski, with a 53, were second and third, respectively, ahead of the Warriors’ low round of 54 by Angela Vigliotti.

It took a 59 from Grace Alexander to help Marcellus clinch the win as Westhill also had Catherine Dadey shoot a 56 and Kate Vaughan a 58 in front of the 61 from Madeline Jones.

Before this, Westhill and Marcellus won matches last Monday as the Warriors put away Christian Brothers Academy 193-203 and the Mustangs prevailed 212-238 over Bishop Grimes.

At Camillus Country Club, the Warriors made up for the 37 by the Brothers’ Meghan McKeen by having Jones shot a 42. Jones, along with Dadey (47) and Vigliotti (49), all topped CBA’s second-best rounds from Annie Kilmartin and Elizabeth Lucas, whose 55s were matched by Vaughan.

Also on its home course at Tuscarora, Marcellus got a low individual round from Colella, whose 44 was just ahead of Grimes’ Olivia Minor, who managed a 46.

Marcellus also defeated Skaneateles 198-227 by getting the four best rounds of the match. Colella had a 46, three ahead of Alexander’s 49, with LaBombard getting a 50 and Koloski a 53 in front of the Lakers’ low total of 55 by Julia Cirincione.

Two days later, Marcellus shot 197 to beat Chittenango (238) and Cazenovia (253) at Cazenovia Country Club, led again by Colella, who had a 42 as LaBombard contributed a 49.

Westhill won again, too, topping Bishop Grimes 203-240. At the Links at Erie Village, Dadey’s 45 beat the Cobras’ Olivia Minor by two shots, with Jones getting a 51 and Vaughan a 62.

Then both teams won Thursday, Marcellus staying unbeaten with a 208-277 romp over Chittenango at Tuscarora as Colella’s 43 was 18 shots ahead of the Bears’ Haley Walters.

As for Westhill, it prevailed 205-244 over Cazenovia at CCC, where Dadey put up a 44 and Jones a 46 ahead of Vigliotti’s 55. Each of them beat the low Lakers round of 56 from Sophie Clancy as Vaughan posted a 60.

West Genesee started its week by going to Northern Pines last Monday and earning a 224-252 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green side.

Again, Mikaela Riley paced the Wildcats, her 54 closely followed by Chrissy Van Allen, who had a season-best 55. Andrea Baule also stepped up, with a 56, as Hannah Kirk got a 58 in front of the Northstars’ duo of Cali Heick and Holy Tinsch, who each shot 62.

A day later, WG took a 186-209 defeat to C-NS Blue. Riley nearly took individual honors, her 43 just one stroke behind the 42 by the Northstars’ Morgan Siechen, but three other Northstars were ahead of Baule (52), Kirk (56) and Allison Kallfelz, who had a 58.

Low scores were present Thursday as WG defeated East Syracuse Minoa Blue 172-176. Riley and Kirk both shot 39, making the difference at the top as the Spartans had Hannah Johnson and Erica Garm put up matching totals of 42.

The Marcellus boys golf team continued to roll through all of its opponents in the Onondaga High School League.

In last Monday’s 213-297 romp over Weedsport, the Mustangs had Shawn Colella shoot a 37 for nine holes, while Caret Austin picked up a 38. Patrick Morocco added a 44, nine shots ahead of the Warriors’ top individual, Aaron Kowal.

Then, on Wednesday, Marcellus handled Solvay 207-293, with Austin leading the way as he shot 37 at Pine Grove.

Colella got a 39 as Morocco improved to a 42 and Matt Regan had a 44, with Lukas Stasyuk shooting 45. For the Bearcats, Noah Capella matched Regan’s 44 and Nate Gardner added a 52 as Brendan Smith shot 56.

Another win followed on Friday at Cazenovia, Marcellus prevailing 215-235 as Colella had a 39 and Austin shot a 40 matched by the Lakers’ Alex Pezzi. Stasyuk finished with a 44, while Morocco and David Bosak both finished at 46.

Jordan-Elbridge also played Wednesday and lost, 226-304, to Cazenovia. Ben Sullivan shot a 49, but no other Eagles round topped the 60 from Jeremy Melli as Alex Prezzi got a 37 for the Lakers.
