Canton Woods: Office of Aging needs your input

By Ruth Troy

Director

The Onondaga County Office for Aging invites you to attend a public hearing where they will share information on their programs and services and ask for your input on their 2018 Service Plan. Choose the date and location that’s best for you. Call (315) 435-2362 Ext. 4945 for special accommodations.

  • 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Jordan-Elbridge Community Center, 1 Route 31, Jordan
  • 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, Bob Cecile Community Center, 174 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse

At Canton Woods, the Neighborhood Advisor Program and the B’ville Express Transportation Program are funded by the Onondaga County Office for Aging (Adult and Long Term Care Services).

B’ville Express always needs volunteer drivers! B’ville Express drivers provide transportation for seniors 60 years of age and over to essential services. This is an incredibly valuable service that helps Baldwinsville seniors to remain in their own homes, in their community. B’ville Express operates out of Canton Woods. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Ellen at (315) 638-4536.

Flu shots will be available from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday Oct. 20. Please call to let us know you plan to attend the clinic (315) 638 4536. Bring your insurance cards.

DATE CHANGE: Emergency Preparedness Presentation will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at Canton Woods. This is a free training course which provides an introduction to responding to a natural or manmade disaster. The course instructor is Staff Sgt. Duane Morgan. Please call the center if you plan to attend.

Look forward to more music at Canton Woods in October. Bare Bones will entertain at 3 p.m. Oct. 26. This performance is brought to Canton Woods through cooperation with the Baldwinsville Public Library.  Bare Bones is “a trombone quartet playing everything from Bach to Basie in an audience-friendly manner.”

Art Group will meet at Canton Woods 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24. This group is facilitated by retired B’ville art teacher, Mike Conway. The group focuses on drawing and painting. Bring your sketchbook and art supplies.

Active Older Adult Exercise lead by a Y instructor has resumed for the fall season. This class is every Tuesday and Thursday. There is a fee for this class payable to the instructor.

Falls Prevention Class returns to Canton Woods after the fall break. This is a free class taught by a licensed physical therapist. Class is held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.

Canton Woods now has a medication return collection unit. This is a safe and environmentally-friendly way to dispose of your unused medications. You may drop off your unused medication to the return box at Canton Woods from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Senior Nutrition. You can enjoy lunch at the center. Canton Woods is a senior nutrition lunch site on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Make a reservation at (315) 638-4536 and stop by at noon for lunch. The nutrition program is open to anyone 60 years of age and older. Suggested donation is $3.

Wondering what’s for lunch? On Monday, Oct. 23, the menu includes All-American Cheeseburger, seasoned potato wedges, blended vegetable slaw and Johnny’s Apple Cobbler! Make a reservation and join us for lunch!

Canton Woods Senior Center is located at 76 Canton St. in Baldwinsville. The center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. To learn more, call (315) 638-4536 or visit baldwinsville.org/departments/cantonwoods.
