Girl Scouts Junior Troop 10043, ages 10 and 11, earned their Bronze Service Award May 3 by hosting a free Spring Fever Family Fun Day for local lower-income families at the CNY Family Sports Centre. The troop worked together with P.E.A.C.E, Inc. and the Baldwinsville Community Food Pantry to connect with families who could benefit from the event. The girls spent many weeks building games, fundraising, donation seeking, doing door-to-door food drives in three generous Baldwinsville neighborhoods and working out the details of the event. Their efforts resulted in a fantastic venue, supplies for the event, fantastic prizes and event a free food pantry. More than 100 guests turned out for the event, with an additional 43 volunteers to help with the registration, games, food service, prize station, security, food pantry area, set up and clean up on the day of the event. Among the volunteers was Girl Scouts Cadette Troop 10572 to celebrate the day. Families spent the day playing free games with carnival-style prizes, plus a booth where kids could collect larger prizes for playing at least 10 games. There were relay races, sand art, face tattoos, dancing to the DJ Twins, portraits by Mike Carter and a jump rope competition. In addition, everyone received raffle tickets to win large-ticket items at the end of the event. There was also a free concession stand for food and drinks, and thanks to the food drives, there was even a generous supply of groceries available for families to pack up and take home with them at the end of the day. The girls were thrilled to provide a day of fun for kids and their families, where they could do anything they wanted, as often and they wanted, and not have to think about a cost. And on top of that, to be able to help stock their pantries at home was a wonderful bonus.
