Speaking at the launch for the Cans for Cancer campaign at Destiny USA are, from left, Laurence “The Can Man” Segal, Daniel Baldwin of the Carol M Baldwin Breast Cancer Fund of CNY, Matthew Capogreco of the Upstate Cancer Center, Aiden McGuire of Destiny USA and Jason Warschal of the American Cancer Society.
Three cancer-fighting organizations are teaming up with Destiny USA and one of the area’s most accomplished bottle and can collectors to launch a massive bottle and can drive in October aimed at benefiting cancer care and research in Central New York.
Dubbed “Cans for Cancer,” the fundraiser aims to collect more than 800,000 bottles and cans to support programs at American Cancer Society, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of Central New York and the Upstate Cancer Center.
Aiding in the effort is Destiny USA, which will host the big bottle and can drop-off day Oct 28. All individuals dropping off bottles and cans Oct. 28 will receive a Destiny USA Passport of Savings, full of exclusive savings, deals and discounts at participating shopping, dining and entertainment venues.
And a bottle and can drive of this magnitude is not complete unless it’s supported by the talents of Laurence Segal, a cancer research advocate from DeWitt whose past bottle and can collection efforts have benefited the Baldwin organization. Segal’s can and bottle collecting efforts for October will go to support Cans for Cancer.
“By the simple task of collecting bottles and cans and bringing them to our Cans for Cancer drop-off day, you will help further cancer research and support services for our friends and neighbors who are battling this awful disease,” said Segal.
The best way to support the Cans for Cancer drive is to bring bottles and cans to Destiny USA’s Pink Solar Street parking lot from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, for easy access and drop off. Destiny USA is located at 9090 Destiny USA Drive, Syracuse. Each individual supporting the campaign by dropping of cans and bottles will receive a coupon booklet for Destiny USA stores and entertainment offerings.
Still want to participate, but cannot make the Oct. 28 drop off?
Individuals can still support the Cans for Cancer drive by returning bottles and cans to vendor of their choice and bringing the bottle return receipts to guest services at Destiny USA located on the first and third levels, or the Upstate Cancer Center, 750 E. Adams St., Syracuse.
Cans and bottles can also be dropped off at Bottles End, 101 Montrose Ave., Solvay, which will donate six cents for every deposit to the campaign.
Online donations to Cans for Cancer can also be made to the Upstate Foundation.
