Even with great individual efforts from Jeremiah Willis and Joe Williams, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field team finished second behind Baldwinsville in Thursday’s Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division championships at SRC Arena.
The Northstars had 99 points, far back of the Bees’ total of 163 points as Liverpool was third with 69 points, with Willis a big presence as, in the triple jump, he unleashed a top effort of 47 feet 11 ¼ inches, more than five feet ahead of the field.
And this came after Willis had won the 55-meter dash in 6.56 seconds, well clear of Henninger’s Nasir Jones (6.78), with Willis also winning the 300-meter dash in 36.25 seconds, nearly half a second better than B’ville’s Greg Porceng (36.70).
In between those sprints, Joe Williams, in the 55-meter hurdles, tore to a time of 7.65 seconds, easily winning as Ryan Williams was third in 8.28 seconds. In the long jump Joe Williams went 21’2” for a second title as Ryan Williams helped the Northstars finish fourth in the 4×200 relay and Joe Williams was sixth in the triple jump.
Calvin Garnes, Aidan Dietz, Derek Harned and Ryan Williams went 3:44.92 for third place in the 4×400 relay, with Liverpool taking fourth place in 3:51.73.
David Ware, in 1:25.67, was second to B’ville’s Kieran Sheridan (1:22.83) in the 600-meter run as Michael McBride was fifth in 1:29.83. Sam Barber was sixth in the 3,200-meter run. Jason Hughes was fourth in the high jump and pole vault.
Liverpool Antwan Kelley won the weight throw for the Warriors, heaving it 54’5”, with Arthur Bittel grabbing third place by throwing it 45’11 ¾” and Austin Kessler sixth. Bittel went 45’11” in the shot put and took second place to B’ville’s Alex Garcia (46’6 ¾”).
James Gaffney won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet. nearly won the 4×800 as T.J. Praschunus, Spencer Ruediger, Cullen McLaughlin and Nathan Reeves posted 8:30.18, one-hundredth of a second behind B’ville’s 8:30.17 as C-NS was fifth in 8:44.83.
Nathan Reeves took third place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:41.04, edging out C-NS’s Nathan Poirier (2:41.15) in fourth place as T.J. Praschunus was seventh and Cullen McLaughlin eighth. Spencer Ruediger was third in the mile in 4:40.08, with Poirier fifth in 4:44.57.
Paul Dewan chased Willis in the triple jump, finishing third with 41’11”. Talmari Turner was fifth in the 55 sprint in exactly seven seconds, the same time as the Northstars’ Malcolm Christian. Cameron O’Connell finished sixth in the 600.
In the girls SCAC Metro meet, the Warriors also were third, gaining 81 points to finish behind Fayetteville-Manlius and B’ville as C-NS was fourth with 61 points.
Liverpool did lots of damage in field events, where Trinity Gray won the weight throw with a toss of 37’1 ½”, a half-inch ahead of B’ville’s Danielle Marsell as Sarah LaValley was third with 36’6 ½”.
In the shot put, LaValley was second with 31’2”, two inches behind B’ville’s Anna Miller as Gray was third with 30’6” and C-NS’s Shelby Varnum was sixth, with the Northstars’ Julie Phillips fifth in the weight throw.
Meghan Milazzo, with a long jump of 16’7 ¼”, finished second to another B’ville star, Adrianna Straughter, who went 17’6 ¾”. Lauren Caldwell cleared 6’6’ for second place in the pole vault.
Anne Gullo, Colleen Tifft, Claire Carlson and Windsor Ardner were third in the 4×400 in 4:19.68, with C-NS (4:26.81) in fifth place. Gullo was fourth in the 300 in 44.42 seconds, while Ardner was fifth in the 600 in 1:41.82, with C-NS’s Sarah Davis in sixth place.
C-NS got its big win from Mia Pestle, who broke up F-M’s dominance of the distance races when she claimed the 1,500-meter run in 4:47.60 over the Hornets’ Claire Walters (4:54.97) as Liverpool’s Sydney Carlson was fifth in 4:58.94.
Meanwhile, in the high jump, the Northstars’ Liliana Klemanski prevailed, clearing 5’3”, one inch better than Straughter as Milazzo and Amina Sinclair topped 5 feet for the Warriors.
Pestle, joined by Kate Putman, Sarah Davis and Allison Newton, was second (10:07.26) in the 4×800 as Liverpool had Ardner, Sydney Carlson, Natalie Kurz and Claudia Brown take third place in 10:09.07. C-NS was fourth and Liverpool sixth in the 4×200.
Kate Putman was third in the 1,000 in 3:09.86, with Kurz (3:13.44) in fourth place. Sierra Davis got a fourth-place triple jump of 34’3” as Shayla Webb was fifth with 34’1 ¾”.
Annina Marullo was fourth (11:11.74) and Newton fifth (11:15.40) in the3,000-meter run, with Victoria Dunn fourth in the 55 sprint in 7.73 seconds and Savannah Kuhr sixth in the 55 hurdles.
