When the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team missed the Jan. 3 Mohawk Valley ITA Partner Relays at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House due to a weather cancellation of school activities, Clinton edged Rome Free Academy in the Lakers’ absence. But things had cleared out by the time Cazenovia returned to Colgate for the fifth MVITA Partner Relays of the winter on Wednesday night – and though it proved close again, the Lakers went back to the top again. Picking up 114 points, Cazenovia needed all of them, since Clinton earned 110 points to finish a close second. Each of them was far ahead of RFA (62 points) in third place. A sweep of the distance running events keyed the Lakers’ victorious effort. Jeanette Cudney, in 5:19.46, and Colleen Stalder (5:26.51) went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run, their combined 10:45.97 well clear of second-place RFA (11:20.60). Then Cudney won the 3,000-meter run in 11:34.27, with Mya Walters second in 12:27.98 as the Lakers topped runner-up Clinton by more than two minutes. In the 800-meter run, Megan Henderson prevailed in 2:36.41, with Grace Milmoe third to help Cazenovia (5:18.12) win and leave Clinton (5:33.08) far behind. Clare Costello won the individual 200-meter dash in 27.95 seconds, with Jessie Matt third (29.33 seconds) as, in 57.28 seconds, the Lakers prevailed over Clinton (59.09 seconds) and the field. Costello, second in the 55-meter dash in 7.80 seconds, teamed with Jessica Macheda for second overall in 15.93 seconds behind RFA (15.54 seconds). In the 400-meter dash, Samantha Gates (1:05.84) and Olivia McEntee (1:07.08) were second and third, respectively, and won the team event in 2:12.92, with Clinton (2:16.91) in second place. Gates paired with Milmoe in the 500-meter run, with a combined 2:56.28, runner-up to Clinton (2:54.78) in the standings. Delaney Yates and Molly Carges were third in the 55-meter hurdles in 21.24 seconds. Liz Pittman and Jessica Macheda combined for second place in the long jump, going 28 feet 1 inch between them as Clinton (29’6 1/2″) prevailed. Pittman and Carges were second in the triple jump (58’8 1/2″), again with the Warriors on top (66’11 1/2″) and Chittenango in fifth place. Joanna Seeley and Hannah Dain, throwing the shot put a combined 50’5″, was second to RFA (71’7″), with Dain and Haley fourth in the weight throw. Macheda and Tori Fischer took third (8’10”) in the high jump, with Fischer helping Glenna Kelahan take second (13’6″) to Clinton (16 feet) in the pole vault. Cazenovia also had a strong showing in the boys MVITA Partner Relays, with 74 points for third place behind RFA (100 points) and Clinton (92 points), while Chittenango slid into sixth place with 33 points. Will Fellows and Sean Satchwell were victorious in the 500, finishing in 2:30.37 to fend off West Canada Valley (2:31.98) for that top spot. Fellows also was third in the 400 in 56.93 seconds as he and Derek White (1:56.47) in the team standings. Meanwhile, in the long jump, Cole Wilard and Teo Lang gave the Lakers another title, Willard second among individuals (18’7 1/2″) as, in a combined 35’1″, it held off RFA (34’7″) to finish in front. As if that wasn’t enough, Willard beat Chittenango’s Martin Boyd, 5’8″ to 5’6″, in the high jump, as Willard and Lang took the team title in 10’10” to RFA’s 10’6″. Alex Devine and Ryan O’Herien were second (14.33 seconds) to RFA (13.63 seconds) in the 55 sprint, with the Bears’ pair of Joe Fanto and Erik Russell in fifth place.
