So far, the Westhill boys soccer team’s regular-season win streak remains healthy and intact, and not even the changing weather could alter plans. The Warriors waited out last Wednesday’s high heat and storms, and then took to the field that night at Fulton, playing a strong second half to pull away and beat the Red Raiders 4-1. What was a close contest, just 1-0 at halftime, broke open because Westhill kept pressing. Tom Kinsella landed a pair of goals, while Alex Skeele and Brian Turan also found the net. A night later, the Warriors were home again and putting away Phoenix 5-1, getting to a 4-0 edge by halftime to settle matters early. Barak Ben Yehuda had a hat trick, putting away three goals and adding an assist, with Skeele and Carter McMahon also netting goals. Jake Etoll managed a pair of assists as Mike Paraszczak got his own assist. Though it got far less attention than their female counterpart’s win at Westhill, Marcellus was quite glad to win at home last Tuesday night, blanking that same Phoenix squad 2-0. Both goals came in the first half, as Mark Tompkins and Evan Turner found the net, with assists credited to Adam Molinari and Jake Welsh. The Firebirds allowed nothing more, but its attack was stifled throughout the night, held to just two shots by a solid Marcellus defense. A 5-0 romp over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill followed on Friday night, the Mustangs unable to put away the Red Devils until it scored four times in the second half as Ian LaFever, in the net, stopped all six shots he faced. Tompkins, with two goals, led the Marcellus attack. Mungza Sen earned a pair of assists as Turner and Nick Matro also found the net. Even more impressive, from the Mustangs’ standpoint, was beating defending Section III Class C champion Fabius-Pompey 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to make it four victories in a row. Again, LaFever earned a shutout, and again finished with six saves. The work of LaFever and the defense paid off when, in the second half, Geoff Golick, unassisted, slipped the ball past Falcons goalie Nate Scalisi, and that tally held up. Bishop Ludden, 0-2 going into the week, earned its first win of the season last Wednesday night with an explosive start that translated into a 5-0 victory over Syracuse Academy of Science. All of the Gaelic Knights’ goals came in the first half, the Atoms overwhelmed as Jon Dussing and Tom Muller each finished with two goals and one assist. John Sauve added a pair of assists as Matt Barletta got the other goal and Brendan Downey contributed an assist. Jordan-Elbridge had to go across the region to face Cazenovia last Tuesday night at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, and never could get started in a 6-0 defeat to the Lakers. Under constant attack, the Eagles found itself trailing 3-0 by halftime, and the margin doubled as Cazenovia got two goals from Kevin Porter and Henry Mann, with Will Fellows and Ted Dwyer adding single tallies. Solvay also lost on Tuesday, victimized early in a 5-0 defeat to Skaneateles. Under constant attack, the Bearcats fell behind 4-0 by halftime, and despite Joe Reale’s 10 saves, he could not keep everything out. Jack Bailey led the visitors with two goals and one assist. Though the Bearcats were closer on Thursday afternoon, it still lost 3-0 to Cazenovia in a game that was tight most of the way before the Lakers, led by Henry Mann (two goals), scored twice in the second half to get clear. That was due to a superb job in the net by Reale, who stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced. J-E faced Skaneateles on Thursday night, taking a 5-0 defeat. Tyler Strods put the Lakers in control with a pair of first-half goals. Jack Bailey found the net twice in the second half against a young (six freshmen starting) Eagle lineup. One of the ninth-graders, Max Bondgren, made five saves. Then the Eagles lost 5-1 to Homer on Saturday, getting on the board with Nick Falcone’s first-half goal, but still seeing the Trojans grab a 2-1 edge at halftime and get away in the latter stages. Bondgren made 14 saves this time around.
