The Salina Democratic Committee has designated two candidates for town council, one for supervisor, one for town justice and one for county legislature. At its annual designation meeting on May 22, the committee endorsed incumbent Second Ward Councilor V. James Magnarelli for re-election to a third term and also backed Ted Santaguida to challenge Fourth Ward incumbent Michael Del Vecchio, Jr., a Republican. Candidates have yet to be announced in the First and Third wards currently represented by Republicans Colleen Gunnip and Jerry Ciciarelli, respectively. The Democrats again chose Patrick Foster to oppose incumbent Republican Supervisor Mark Nicotra, who is seeking his fourth term. In 2011, Nicotra solidly defeated Foster by a vote total of 3,572 to 1,775. Foster had been endorsed that year by the Central New York Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. Last month the Dems also tapped Liverpool lawyer Aaron Arnold to run for town justice against longtime incumbent Judge Andrew Piraino, and tapped social worker Carol Sinesi to run for county legislature in the Fourth District against two-term incumbent Judy Tassone. In 2011, Tassone prevailed for a second time after a bitter race against former county legislator David Stott, who chose not to run again this year. The Democrats cross-endorsed incumbent Receiver of Taxes Alicia MacCollum.
The Democratic town committee is chaired by Carrie Roseamelia who ran an unsuccessful campaign for town council in 2011 against Fourth Ward incumbent Del Vecchio.
