Though the West Genesee softball team lost three times last week, it ended up on a particularly high note that nearly matched the excitement of its epochal 13-inning victory over Liverpool on April 25. Going up against defending Class A champion Jamesville-DeWitt on Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats put together an impressive all-around effort and defeated the Red Rams 3-2. They matched each other most of the way, Morgan Nichols and J-D ace Kerri Keeler keeping it 0-0 until the fourth inning, when the Rams got on the board with a run but WG retaliated with a run of its own. So it was 1-1 going to the sixth. Again, J-D went in front, but again the Wildcats answered, getting to Keeler for two runs to move out in front, and watching Nichols pitch a scoreless seventh to seal the victory. Tess Andrews hit a solo home run and also singled, scoring twice, while Nichols added an RBI to support a pitching effort where she limited J-D to six hits and struck out five. This eventful week began when WG went up against Cicero-North Syracuse, the reigning Class AA champions, who overwhelmed WG in a 13-0 decision. Syracuse University-bound senior star Sydney O’Hara wasted little time jumping on the Wildcats, following a leadoff single and walk by smashing a three-run home run over the left-field fence in the top of the first inning, her fourth round-tripper of the season. Later, in the fifth, O’Hara doubled to start a two-run rally, and in the seventh it got out of hand with seven runs, bookended by two more O’Hara doubles as she ran her total to five RBIs. And all the while, O’Hara worked on a perfect game, retiring the first 18 WG batters she faced, 16 of them through strikeouts, before Kaleigh Churchill and Andrews got seventh-inning singles to break up the gem. But O’Hara still got her 17th and 18th strikeouts to close it out. Following this up, WG visited Syracuse East on Wednesday afternoon and got into a back-and-forth struggle, but the Wildcats did enough on the offensive end to prevail by a score of 9-7. An early 3-0 lead vanished when East scored three times in the bottom of the second. Even when WG restored the three-run margin (6-3) in the fifth, East stayed tight, and the three runs the Wildcats scored in the top of the sixth would prove decisive. Andrews got two big hits that led to five RBIs. Marisa Joyce added a pair of hits, scoring three runs as she joined Churchill and Jenna Amidon with one RBI apiece. Allie Nave took her turn in the pitcher’s circle and made it the whole way, earning 10 strikeouts. Marcellus managed to beat WG 6-4 in a non-league contest Thursday afternoon, getting four runs in the second inning off Nichols and two runs in the fourth that proved decisive. Molly MacLachlan, the winning pitcher, managed two doubles and three RBIs, while Meghan Witkowski also had three hits as she and Jennie Delia had one RBI apiece. And the Wildcats (6-5) lost 8-0 to Solvay on Friday, the unbeaten Bearcats scoring in five of the first six innings against Amidon, who took the loss as she struck out five. Nicole Antonacci hit a home run for Solvay as Molly McGuire smashed a pair of doubles.
