Zach Driscoll’s tough singles victory in a match that went to the wire helped the Skaneateles boys tennis team hang on and beat rival Marcellus 3-2 last Monday afternoon. Already, the Lakers had two singles points put away, as Ethan Wilcox blanked John Kramer 6-0, 6-0 and Austin Amory worked through a second-set tie-breaker to take out Sean Koloski 6-2, 7-6. With the teams of Kevin Goetzmann-Matt Kallas and Tom Bronk-Alex LaGrow beaten in straight sets by the exact same 6-4, 6-3 scores, Driscoll had to win his third singles match against the Mustangs’ Alex Pirro. After shutting out Pirro 6-0 in the first set, Driscoll struggled, losing the second set 6-3, and found himself in a third-set tie-breaker. But Driscoll regrouped just in time and won that tie-breaker, plus the match, by a 7-6 margin. Going up against Cazenovia on Wednesday afternoon, Skaneateles proved the better of the two Laker sides, winning by a 4-1 margin. A key point came in doubles, where Bronk, now teamed with Griffin Walawender, got pushed to a third set, but still beat Ben Concilla and Harry McDonough 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. That completed a doubles sweep, since Goetzmann and Kallas had already beaten Wyatt Lansing and Mason Stehle 6-1, 7-6. Up in singles play, Driscoll took a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Conner Elsworth, but that didn’t stop Skaneateles as Wilcox, in straight sets, beat Eli Lagorga 6-0, 6-2, while Amory handled Galen Okoniewski 6-1, 6-3. And Skaneateles made it three in a row on Thursday, demolishing Jordan-Elbridge 5-0. Goetzmann and Kallas had a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Nick Pierleoni and Anthony Trinh, while Bronk and Walawender rolled past Isaac Liptak and Nick Twomey 6-1, 6-0. Going to singles play, Zach Driscoll got a challenge from Nick Gallaro, but still won 6-4, 6-2, while LaGrow and Connor Driscoll had equal 6-1, 6-0 wins over, respectively, Josh Gallaro and Kyle Sherman.
