What was already a regular-season homestretch full of significance for the Cazenovia girls basketball team, featuring next Tuesday night’s visit from undefeated Westhill, only got more interesting, thanks to the intervention of weather. Cazenovia’s game at Skaneateles on Friday was postponed, and they’ll make it up Feb. 11 at 6:30, a mere two days before Section III playoff pairings are announced. Just before it was supposed to go to Skaneateles, the state Class B no. 22-ranked Lakers tuned up in a convincing manner by trouncing Hannibal 53-20 in last Wednesday night’s league contest at Buckley Gym. Already with a 12-6 advantage through one period, Cazenovia proceeded to shut down Hannibal over the next two periods, giving up just four total points. That included a 21-2 outburst in the second quarter that decided matters. Eight different Lakers connected on field goals, led again by Carpenter, who finished with 14 points. Audrey Burbidge stepped up for eight points, while Kaitlyn Gerber had seven points. Kristie Kleine, Sally Langan and Maggie Johnson had six points apiece. Then the snow arrived, and now the Lakers, through the Westhill clash and the rescheduled trip to Skaneateles, will learn a lot about where it stands before the post-season.
