Anything the Baldwinsville ice hockey team could accomplish as the calendar turns to 2013 would be a welcome sight. Heading into the new year, the Bees are 3-5-1, still in Division I playoff contention, but also reeling from a pair of poor performances that came in the waning days of 2012. When the Bees met Cicero-North Syracuse on Dec. 21 at Cicero Twin Rinks, everything went wrong, especially in the second period of a 10-1 defeat to the Northstars. C-NS, chasing Rome Free Academy atop the Division I East standings, quickly gained a 2-0 lead, but saved its real magic for the second period. B’ville could stop nothing as the Northstars registered seven unanswered goals, taking away all of the game’s suspense. At least the Bees broke the shutout in the third period with Parker Ferrigan’s goal, but did little more. Combined, Josh Pinard and Nick Harper had 33 saves as C-NS saw eight different players earn goals, Jesse Farabee and Connor Doren leading the way as they both scored twice. Still at home last Friday, B’ville met up with defending Section III Division II champion Oswego, who could not match C-NS’s awesome production, but proved just as stingy as the Buccaneers shut out the Bees 4-0. Taking early control, Oswego had a 2-0 lead through one period, and doubled it as the game went on, led there by Sean Mooney, who got one goal and assisted on the other three, two of them by Jake Anderson. Even though this game did not get away like C-NS did, B’ville met with frustration. It took just as many shots as Oswego, but could get nothing past Bucs goalie Chase Izyk, who stopped all 28 shots he faced. A chance for total recovery arrives for B’ville this weekend as it hosts Central Square on Friday and goes west to face Rochester McQuaid on Saturday afternoon.
