Abby Uczen and Laura Leff helped West Genesee’s girls indoor track and field team clam third place during last Friday’s Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays at SRC Arena. Overall, the Wildcats picked up 43 points, a number that topped most of the 19-team field. Liverpool won with 54 points, edging Fayetteville-Manlius (50 points) for the top spot. Uczen was victorious in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet 6 inches, a foot better than Liverpool’s Angela Kupla, and it meant second-place points all by herself. Then she teamed with Brianna Richardson to finish second in the triple jump, going 62’ 11”, just behind Cicero-North Syracuse, who won with 63’ 1 ½”. In the 55-meter hurdles, Richardson, fourth among individuals in 9.56 seconds, and Emily Iles were second in the team event in 19.93 seconds, again trailing C-NS (19.30 seconds). Solvay’s Hailey Holcomb and Jessica Kutts tied for sixth. Leff helped the Wildcats get 10 more points. Individually, she won the 1,000-meter run in 3:03.23, nearly eight seconds ahead of F-M’s Michelle Duffy (3:10.98), and combined with Olivia Kastick for third (6:47.10) on the team side. In a close 400-meter dash, Leff took second in 1:01.70, just behind Liverpool star Ore Akinpelu (1:01.42), as Jordan-Elbridge eighth-grader Julie Hines (1:02.34) was third. Leff and Meg Hannahan were fourth (2:13.71) among teams. Local teams dominated the shot put, where Westhill/Bishop Ludden earned most of its points, the duo of Bella Sterly and Kayla Wild getting second and third, respectively, among individuals and combining to throw it 66’ 7”. That left WG’s duo of Maureen McInerney and Erica Fitch in second place with 58’ 4 ¼”. Emily Washburn and Molly Clark gave Westhill/Ludden a fifth-place finish in the mile relay in 11:48.56, just ahead of WG’s Sarah Ferranti and Annie Baker in sixth. In the boys edition of the Jensen Relays, Solvay, with 20 points, had the best finish among the local teams, with Jordan-Elbridge getting 10 points and West Genesee just seven points. Much activity took place in the 600-meter run, where J-E’s Jack Gugel was second in 2:43.82 and, with Dylan Whittico (sixth), got the runner-up spot on the team side with 5:31.10, just ahead of Solvay’s Matt Battaglia and Eric Goodrich, who were third in 5:38.95. Solvay’s Brian McLeod and Nick Cometti teamed for second place in the high jump, clearing 11’ 4” between them, and that same pair earned fourth place (36’ 1 ¾”) in the long jump. The Bearcats also had Frank Pucello and Luke Randall reach fifth (77’ 7 ¼”) in the shot put. WG’s Pete Richardson and Jackson Powell were fifth in the 55 hurdles as Ben Brown and Nico RInaldo got to fifth in the 55 sprint. Richardson and Wes Randall got to fifth in the 300 sprint, with Nate Conroy and Logan MacNulty sixth in the mile relay. Also for J-E, Bill DiRenzo and Jacob Patterson rose to fifth in the 400 sprint in 1:53.02. Casey Bunce gave Westhill/Ludden a third-place time of 10:19.71 in the 3,200-meter individual race.
