On two fronts, the Skaneateles girls tennis team plunged itself into the post-season – first the individual side, and then the team side. All of the top singles and doubles teams gathered Monday and Tuesday afternoon for the Division III tournament, and the Lakers’ doubles team of Grace and Kathryn Magee would blaze their way to the championship. In last Monday’s action at Utica Parkway Courts, the Magees earned a first-round win over Elizabeth Sasser and Sarah Roberts (CBA), and also prevailed in the quarterfinal round as fellow Lakers Angela Krause and Liz Belinski fell in those early rounds. To close out the day, the Magees faced Westhill’s duo of Bridget Sherlock and Phoebe Langdon, and took just two sets to prevail 6-4, 6-1. This led to the final a day later at Fayetteville-Manlius between the sisters and the familiar Marcellus tandem of Renee Poullott and Emily Hennigan. In the first set, the Magees won 6-4, only to lapse in the second set as Poullott and Hennigan prevailed 6-1. Shaking that off, Grace and Kathryn played a confident third set and, by a 6-2 margin, lay claim to the doubles crown. On the singles side, Katelyn Ellison took an early defeat, but Makenzi Herbst, the no. 4 seed, followed a first-round bye with a quarterfinal victory before running into Cazenovia’s Elizabeth Palmer in the semifinals, where Herbst lost 6-0, 6-0. When all this was done, the Lakers turned to the Section III Class C team tournament, where it held the no. 3 seed and would meet no. 6 seed Westmoreland in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Lakers prevailed in a 5-0 sweep, setting up an interesting semifinal against no. 2 seed Clinton, who blanked Sauquoit Valley 5-0 to get this far. The winner here would get to the championship round against Beaver River or Copenhagen.
