It’s fair to say that Kristie Klein was ready to push the Cazenovia girls soccer team into the win column. Klein’s sizzling performance carried the Lakers to a 7-1 romp over Hannibal last Tuesday night at the Sean Googin Sports Complex. New lights at the complex mean that most of the Lakers’ home games will take place at night, but no electricity was required for Klein to quickly light things up. During a first-half offensive blitz, the Lakers roared to a 6-1 lead as, over and over, Klein put herself in prime position near the Warriors’ net and pushed a shot home. By the time the night was done, Klein had six goals, by far the highest total of her career. Kelsi Fredericks had the other goal and assisted on two of Klein’s tallies as Claire Costello and Kelsey Henderson earned assists, too. Before all this, in the Sept. 1 opener Cazenovia fell to Cortland 3-2, even though Klein and Audrey Burbidge scored and assisted on each other’s goals. Jamie Enders recorded 13 saves as Shea Swartout had two of the Purple Tigers’ goals. After Klein’s Hannibal outburst, Cazenovia visited Manlius-Pebble Hill on Friday afternoon, where it cooled off and could not get on the board, falling to the Trojans 1-0. Once Alexia Melendez-Martineau put MPH on the board in the first half, the Lakers gave an all-out effort to pull even. But every Cazenovia shot got scooped up as Trojans goalie Sammy Appleby managed to earn nine saves. Chittenango’s girls team, who went 9-8-1 a season ago, dominated in its OHSL Liberty debut, ripping Jordan-Elbridge 7-0 as it roared to a 4-0 halftime lead and never let up. Kayla Bain and Lauren Farsaci both got a pair of goals, with Katrina Farsaci, Alexa Farsaci and Emily Gibbons notching single goals. Clare St. Ledger and Greta Swift earned assists as the Bears took 28 shots to the Eagles’ six, all of which were stopped by Sierra Shafer. Things turned, though, in last Tuesday’s 5-1 defeat to Westhill, where the Warriors roared out to a 3-0 halftime lead and never got Chittenango involved, even though Kate Boyer broke up the shutout with a second-half goal. Shafer finished with 10 saves. Shaking this off, Chittenango moved to 2-1 on the season Thursday by blanking Phoenix 4-0, using a trio of first-half goals to seize quick control. Billington and Farsaci, each with one goal and one assist, led the Bears’ balanced attack. Caity Foster and Ashley Young also converted, with Bain adding an assist.
