Just one more day of competition remains for the Baldwinsville baseball team – one that could prove quite historic. The Bees advanced to the state Class AA final four as left-handed pitcher Scott Orr delivered a memorable mound performance in a 6-1 win over Section II champion Columbia in Tuesday’s regional final at the College of Saint Rose in Albany Not caring one bit about Columbia’s experience on its roster (11 seniors out of 18 players), Orr blanked the Blue Devils until a fifth-inning solo home run by Tim Gaule. And that was one of just three hits Orr allowed. Quick and efficient, he only threw 74 pitches and did not walk any Columbia batters, recording four strikeouts and getting error-free defense behind him. Meanwhile, the Bees wasted little time going in front, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning off Blue Devils starter Rip Van Winkle. Connor Martin, Zach Leo and Jake Norton drove in those runs. Another run followed in the second, forcing Van Winkle out, and B’ville made it 6-0 in the fourth inning, which was more than enough for Orr to protect. Gabe Levanti led the way, going three-for-three with a walk, stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI. Martin added two hits. Jimmy Schmidt also drove in a run as Brett Charbonneau managed a pair of hits. On Saturday at 1 p.m., B’ville takes on defending state champion Victor (Section V) in the Class AA state semifinals at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton. Victor drubbed Lancaster (Section VI) 15-1 in its regional final. Should the Bees win, it would stay at NYSEG Stadium for the championship game, immediately after the semifinal.
