No one would come close to the Cazenovia girls track and field team as it rocketed toward the top spot in Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus High School.
All told, the Lakers accumulated 195 points, more than twice the total of runner-up Skaneateles, who had 96.5 points. Homer, with 87 points, took third place.
Ashley Winn and Jillian Vogl went 1-2 in a pair of sprints. Winn beat Vogl, 12.82 seconds to 13.11, in the 100-meter dash, and Winn needed 26.52 seconds to hold off Vogl (26.65 seconds) in the 200-meter dash.
To counter that, Vogl tore to victory in the 400-meter dash in 57.80 seconds, with Winn (1:00.25) in third. Together, they joined Anna Schultz and Ashley Kent to dominate the 4×400 relay with a top time of 51.42 seconds. Kent added a third (1:14.04) in the 400 hurdles.
Paige Biviano won twice, taking the 100 hurdles in 16.36 seconds ahead of Kent (17.74 seconds) in third and clearing 5 feet to win the high jump, with Marie Sugio (4’8”) in fifth. Biviano added a second in the long jump (15’8”), where Liz Pittman was third (14’6 ½”), and gained third in the shot put with a toss of 28’6 ¼”.
Pittman had a third-place triple jump of 31’ ¾” and cleared 8 feet to gain fourth place in the pole vault, while Lizzy Bigsby rose to third place in the pentathlon, earning 1,696 points.
In distance events, Caroline Marshall rolled to a victory in the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.73, nearly 12 seconds better than Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Annibel Coolican, with Michelle Karker fourth in 5:13.49.
Marshall took second in the 800-meter run in 2:27.28, with Jeannette Cudney third in 2:28.67. It was the same in the 3,000-meter run, where Cudney this time was second (10:57.99) and Rae Tobey (11:06.01) gained third place. Tobey earned second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:41.09.
In the 4×800 relay, Cudney, Marshall, Karker and Margaret Wolsey were third in 10:19.77, with Marshall joining Karker, Wolsey and Colleen Stadler for sixth in the 4×400.
Cazenovia’s boys track team, led again by Dylan Muller, earned 32 points for seventh place in the nine-team OHSL Liberty field as CBA, with 132 points, claimed the top spot.
Again, Muller came close to his school record of 13 feet 2 inches in the pole vault, clearing exactly 13 feet to win that event. In the triple jump, Muller went 40’3 ¾” and finished second to Khiary Gale (Skaneateles), who won with 45’3”, and Muller took sixth in the 400 spring in 54.45 seconds.
Cameron Braathen stepped up, too, as he gained third place in the discus with a throw of 118’11” and added a fourth in the shot put with 42’11”. Shawn Satchwell was fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:51.61, and added a sixth (4:54.25) in the mile.
