The Syracuse Police department website, syracusepolice.org, was the latest target of global hacking group Anonymous. The department noticed the site had been hacked at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, said Syracuse Police Sgt. Tom Connellan. The public information website was the only hacked site. A listing of usernames and passwords for the site were posted by Anonymous, but all are no longer operational. All internal information including police reports, records and mugshots are secure on the internal server, Connellan said. The website will be down for a couple days while the department ensures the information is safe. No permanent damage was done to the site. The department was not notified of the hacking. Anonymous posted an explanation behind why Syracuse was targeted online. Their information says it is a part of Operation Piggy Bank, searchable by #OpPiggyBank on Twitter, which is an effort to target police departments’ websites. Anonymous cites the “insufficient effort” in regard to the ongoing Bernie Fine investigation, and the admission that former Syracuse Police Chief Dennis DuVal knew about the sexual abuse allegations against Fine. The hacking group also cites the case of Brian Hutchings, a former Auburn police officer who was convicted of 29 charges alleging bribery and official misconduct. A Texas police association and the Salt Lake City Police Department website were also targeted as part of Operation Piggy Bank in the last week. Anonymous hackers taking responsibility for the hack have declined comment.
