In three 2011 appearances, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team never lost, which might bode well for 2012, too. The Lakers overwhelmed all competition at Friday’s John DiMao Memorial Invitational at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House, earning 146.5 points. Rome Free Academy was second with 71 points, not even half Cazenovia’s total. Cazenovia swept all three relays. In the 4×200, Ashley Winn, Jillian Vogl, Ashley Kent and Emily Willard set the pace, its time of one minute, 51.88 seconds more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up RFA (1:59.37). Kent would return in the 4×400, helping Maria VanNieuwland, Grace Milmoe and Jackie O’Sullivan win a three-way thriller, its time of 4:49.16 inches ahead of New Hartford (4:49.19) and RFA (4:49.85). By contrast, Caroline Marshall, Megan Stanford, Jeannette Cudney and Evelyn Wells dominated the 4×800, posting a time of 10:39.25 that beat second-place New Hartford by nearly a full minute. Individually, Paige Biviano was unstoppable. She pulled away to win the 55-meter hurdles in 9.27 seconds (no one else was under 10 seconds) and went 15 feet 10 1/2 inches to edge West Canada Valley’s Sarah Witar by one inch in the long jump. Biviano only was second in the high jump to RFA’s Dana Husband because she had more misses than Husband, though both cleared 5 feet 1 inch. Willard (4 feet 9 inches) was fourth. Liz Pittman added a third (28 feet 1 1/2 inches) in the triple jump, where Hannah Light-Olson was sixth. Winn swept the sprints, beating Vogl, 7.53 seconds to 7.84, in the 55-meter dash and taking the 300-meter dash in 42.86 seconds. Molly Woodworth won the shot put with a heave of 28 feet 5 inches as Carly Hazer took sixth behind Chittenango’s Alex Paige in fifth. Marshall zoomed to first in the 1,500-meter run in 4:57.36 as she and Cudney (5:13.54) went 1-2 in the standings. Stanford would prevail in the 600-meter run in 1:52.04, where Chittenango teammates Brianna Boyer and Ali Houseman were fourth and sixth, respectively. Elsewhere, Rae Tobey was fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 3:34.66, with Emma Wolsey (3:43.01) in sixth place, and Woodworth landed in fifth place in the weight throw as VanNieuwland tied for fifth in the pole vault. On the boys side at the DiMao meet, Cazenovia, with 43.5 points, eased into fifth place in an 11-team field as RFA won with 98 points. Again, the Lakers excelled in relay events, the quartet of Dylan Muller, Matt Donovan, Doyle Judge and Anthony Randino going 1:41.61 to beat Clinton (1:42.34) in the 4×200. David Ayer, Billy Bigsby, Nick Tedesco and Teddy Tormey were fourth (4:08.27) in the 4×400. On his own, Bigsby nearly won the mile, his time of 4:59.02 second to Clinton’s Adam Bankert (4:44.12), and he added a sixth in the 1,000. Donovan and Ayer were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 300 sprint. Muller, clearing 11 feet 4 inches, rose to second in the pole vault and was sixth in the triple jump as Judge (5 feet 6 inches) tied for fifth in the high jump. Cameron Braathen was third in the shot put, heaving it 38 feet 1/2 inch, and he was seventh in the weight throw. Randino got to fifth in the long jump with 17 feet 10 inches. Weather permitting, the Lakers would go to Colgate twice in the first week of 2012 for Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association Partner Relays – one on Tuesday, the other on Friday – before the Jan. 10 MVITA championships.
