On the winter’s coldest day, Cicero-North Syracuse’s boys indoor track and field team kept itself warm – and happy – by earning the top spot at Wednesday’s Oscar Jensen Holiday Relays at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Field House.
The Northstars, with 82 points, claimed its second title of the month, as Fayetteville-Manlius took second with 60 points. Liverpool was fourth, earning 43 points.
Overall, CNS won four times, including the pole vault, where Mike Hyde and Cameron Shaughnessy went 1-2 among individuals, each of them clearing 12 feet. In the triple jump, Bryson Mayes, tops among individuals (40 feet 7 1/4 inches), joined third-place Morgan Austen for another title, the pair going 79 feet 8 inches.
On the track, Mark Broughton and Shawn Webb teamed up to take the 300-meter dash relay in a combined time of 1:16.20, while Ken Ryan and Paul DeGennaro earned another victory in the 1,000-meter run with a total time of 5:43.48.
Elsewhere, Anthony Lupia and Neil Gill were second in the mile relay in 9:15.70, while Broughton and Shaughnessy were just behind Corcoran, 13,81 seconds to 13.78, in the 55-meter dash. Joe Castado (third) and Austin George (fifth) teamed up for second in the shot put with throws of 80 feet 10 3/4 inches.
Hyde and Joel Brousseau cleared 11 feet 6 inches to claim second in the high jump. Mayes and Frank Volino were third (17.31 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles, with Lupia and Bryan Juond fifth in the 3,200-meter relay. Jalen Jenkins and Daquan Mathis were fifth in the long jump.
As for Liverpool, Zavon Watkins won two individual titles. He took the 800-meter run in 2:03.19, getting second with teammate Anthony Ostuni in 4:18.61, and also claiming the 600-meter run in 1:22.77, as he and Keewan Rondinello were second overall in 2:58.16.
Also, Rondinello and Mike Schneider were third in the 400-meter dash in a combined 1:50.61. Jeff Conley and Mark VanMarter were third in the 300 sprint in 1:20.80. Jeff Miller and Anthony Bell were fourth in the shot put with throws adding up to 74 feet 2 inches.
Alex Christenson and Landon Veney were fourth in the 1,000 (5:50.91). Ostuni and Connor Buck combined for fourth in the mile relay. Mike Schneider and Gaurab Bhattacharya were fifth in the 55 hurdles.
Moving to the girls portion of the Jensen Relays, CNS had 52 points to take third place and Liverpool earned 46 points for fifth place. F-M (70 points) and J-D (55 points) held down the top two spots.
CNS was victorious in the 55 hurdles, where Hannah Szumloz was second among individuals (9.58 seconds) and won with Marissa Colburn in 19.83 seconds, with Liverpool’s tandem of Tammy Brodie and Leah Dixon second in 20.38 seconds. Szumloz would also help Tiffany Ryan get third (56 feet 7 1/4 inches) in the triple jump.
Nicole Watterud and Maria LaMontagne gave the Northstars a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run in a combined time of 22:28.66, with Liverpool fifth in 24:06.68. Shannon McCarthy and Javielle Fanizzi were second (9 feet 4 inches) in the high jump, one inch behind Baldwinsville.
The Northstars’ Taylor Parry and Emily Dolan took third in the 1,500-meter run (10:36.78), with the Warriors’ Emily Butler and Julianna Basla fourth in 10:48.32. Katie Laris and Madison Kolakowski got to third in the 1,000 in 6:41.65.
Liverpool’s Are Okinpelu won the individual 600-meter run in 1:42.35, but she and Kyla Bills were a close second (3:27.90) behind F-M (3:27.54) overall. Akinpelu got second in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.96 as she and Catherine Rowell claimed third in 2:06.43 and CNS was sixth. Rowell and Laura Leung gained fourth (56 feet 1/2 inch) in the triple jump.
Nicole Barrett and Jessica Attaway teamed to clear 13 feet 6 inches for a runner-up spot in the pole vault. Nelliah Watkins and Claire McCarthy moved Liverpool to fourth (48 feet 11 inches) in the shot put. Connie Torres and Yasmeen Griffin were fifth in the 300 sprint.
CNS and Liverpool’s team are back at SRC Arena on Jan. 6, starting 2012’s slate with the George Constantino Memorial.
