The 13th season of Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf did not turn out unlucky – far from it. Instead, the Hornets churned out another undefeated regular season, another CNY Counties League title and another Section III team title, plus sent four of its players to the state tournament at SUNY-Delhi. F-M has won four sectional titles in five years, only interrupted by CBA in 2009. Following its 10-0 romp through the regular season, the Hornets claimed sectional team honors May 24 at Foxfire Golf Club by an eight-shot margin over the Brothers. Seniors Alex Seabury and Maria Mintskovsky, along with juniors Carly Kidd and Meghan Kingsley, advanced to the state tournament, and were joined by senior Lela Feldmeier, junior Briana Winslow and freshman Kenzie Kingsley on the sectional squad. At Delhi on June 11-12, Seabury tied for fifth with a 36-hole score of 155, trailing, among others, Baldwinsville senior Lauren Petty, who won the individual state title. Kidd and Mintskovsky tied for 47th, with Kingsley sharing 54th place. In all, head coach Anne Miller and assistant Tom Chaddock had 22 players on the roster, the largest group in the program’s history, composed of seven seniors, seven juniors, five freshmen and three sophomores. Allison Donella, Abby Boduch, Adrianna Kam, Alexandra Millimaci, Kayla Pallotta, Natalie Powers, Caroline Kahn, Gina Rhee, Erin Egnaczak, Kristen Gamble, Tara Wellington, Jessica Vogt, Kelly Brown, Andrea Dobbie and Meghan Schafer rounded out the roster. Eighth-grader Annie Caputo served as team manager. One big change in 2011 was a new home venue – Green Lakes State Park. Though it lacks a driving range, Miller said the team had access to a practice hole and that everyone on the roster could fit onto Green Lakes’ large practice green for putting work. From a golf standpoint, the large hills, bunkers and tough greens at Green Lakes prepared the entire team for tournaments at other venues, especially for Seabury, Mintskovsky, Kidd and Kingsley, who dealt with similar challenges when they went to SUNY-Delhi’s course in mid-June. Each player was required to, starting in mid-March, walk or run two miles daily on Pride Lane at F-M, along with stretching exercise and indoor putting and chipping. For the latter, F-M players visited the Turning Stone Golf Dome in Verona one day a week for instruction from the resort’s three professionals – Marty Nowicki, Miles Blundell and Andy Myers. Miller said the lessons were valuable so that, when the season began, the coaches merely needed to reinforce things already learned. F-M chose not to have a team captain this spring, but maintained a strong chemistry while the players focused on personal goals, whether it was improving various facets of the game or just having a better attitude and working harder. Helping in that cause, said Miller, were some well-established team traditions. The “Hornet Club”, a miniature club, went every two weeks to a player that stood out in some way. Skill competitions led to awarding of the “Pride Ball” to winners. They also got drivers’ head covers rewarding hard work (Beaver), loyalty (Dog), team spirit (Lion), skill (Tiger), determination (Penguin) and enthusiasm (Cockatoo). Six years ago, Chaddock established the “B” championship for players who didn’t quite reach the sectional team level. In the 2011 edition at Buttnernut Creek, Donella took the individual title, beating Boduch in a playoff after both shot matching nine-hole scores of 35. Kam had a 39, with Millimaci, Pollatta and Powers each shooting 40. As always, Miller and Chaddock encourage the returning players to play in Central New York Junior PGA events during the summer, and some of them will reunite in late July to play in the Pro-Junior Challenge, part of the LPGA Futures Tour’s Alliance Bank Classic at Drumlins Country Club.
