Capping off a record-setting campaign, Liverpool junior Zavon Watkins won two Division I (large school) championships, during last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships at Caledonia-Mumford. In the 800-meter run on Friday night, Watkins ran through the first lap in 56.08 seconds, lingering just behind Monroe-Woodbury’s Ryan Brennan, who ran a 55.80 split. But on the second lap, Watkins sped up, took the lead and finished in one minute, 51.32 seconds, beating Brennan by 0.81 seconds. A day later, Watkins went for a double in the mile. He calmly stayed in the pack through the first two laps and was still in that pack with one lap to go before making his big move. Going the final lap in 57.50 seconds, Watkins finished in 4:12.52, edging Chaminade’s Thomas Awad (4:12.86) for Division I honors as Greene’s Chad Noelle, from Division II (small schools), won the overall title in 4:11.17. As for Cicero-North Syracuse, senior Chris Buchanan was ninth in the Division I 3,200-meter run and 13th overall in 9:17.19. Mike Hyde cleared 12 feet in the pole vault, where Jordan Yamoah (Arlington) won with a clearance of 16 feet 7 inches. The Northstars’ quartet of Mark Broughton, Avery Yarn, Andrew Johnson and Ryan Connor finished 11th in the Division I 4×100 relay in 43.61 seconds. Moving to the girls state meet, CNS junior Katie Osborne had a solid showing in the Division I pentathlon, accumulating 3,011 points in five events to finish seventh, including a time of 15.81 seconds in the 100 hurdles and a clearance of 5 feet 2 1/2 inches in the high jump. New Rochelle’s Amira Privott-Yeiser won with 3,343 points. Junior Jessica Wheeler represented the Northstars in the pole vault, where she cleared 9 feet 3 inches as Megan Clark (James O’Neill HS) took the top spot by clearing 12 feet. Liverpool’s 4×100 relay team of Hannah Anthes, Armani Moore, Shanice Leach and Connie Torres was 14th in 51.05 seconds.
