Local track and field athletes, led by Marcellus senior Jesse Garn and West Genesee freshman Laura Leff, found all kinds of success during last weekend’s state championship meet at Caledonia-Mumford High School. Garn was one of the top performers in the Division II (small school) mile. He finished in four minutes, 13.38 seconds to take second place in Division II behind Greene’s Chad Noelle, who won the overall event in 4:11.17. Leff, the new Section III record-holder in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, roared to a time of 6:51.28 in her specialty, finishing fourth. Ward Melville’s Mary Kate Anselmini, who holds the national record in this event, won in 6:33.14, just 0.13 seconds off that national mark. Moving to the boys side, WG senior John DeLallo again impressed in the 800-meter run, taking seventh place in 1:53.49 as Liverpool’s Zavon Watkins won that event in 1:51.32. Fellow senior Billy Gabriel was ninth among Division I runners and 18th overall in the mile in 4:25.27. As for Garn’s teammate, Ryan Manahan, he finished seventh in the Division II 3,200-meter run in 9:22.35. Moving to the girls side, the Mustangs’ 4×800 relay quartet of Lizzy Dean, Rachel Garn, Maggie Dunn and Tori Stopen finished fifth in Division II and 17th overall in a time of 9:35.05. Solvay’s Nick Cometti was 17th in the boys Division II 100-meter dash in 11.50 seconds, while Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Jack Honis was 20th in the Division I 110-meter high hurdles.
