Solid performances by West Genesee’s Conor Salanger and John Clare helped Section III finish second in the team standings during last week’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament in Ithaca. Playing on Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones-designed layout, Salanger, a senior, and Clare, a sophomore, finished next to each other right in the middle of the individual pack. In the first round June 5, Salanger shot a first-round 83, two shots ahead of Clare. A day later, both players improved as Salanger got an 81 and Clare moved up to an 80. With a total of 164, Salanger tied for 46th, one stroke better than Clare, who shared 49th with 165, all part of a strong effort by the Section III squad. Led by Eric Edmunds (Skaneateles), who took third place in 147, and Derek Bard (New Hartford), who tied for fourth with 148, Section III had a team total of 1,092, just eight strokes behind Section V, who won in 1,084. Salanger, Clare, Edmunds, Derek Bard, Alec Bard (also of New Hartford, who tied for ninth), Jeff Baldetti (also of Skaneateles), Keith Smith (Remsen), Seth Adams (Camden) and Chadd Call (General Brown) made up the entire squad. It proved a spectacular individual finish. Pittsford’s Gavin Hall, down by two with one hole to play, eagled the par-five 18th hole and won by one shot with a total of 145 when the leader, Matt VanNiekirk (Harley Allendale Columbia), three-putted for a bogey on that same home hole.
